Waterproofing and Protection of Sewage Facilities

Sewage facilities like treatment plants, masonry or concrete channels, and manholes can be seriously damaged due to moisture and attack of aggressive ions. When pores and capillaries are left open for chloride penetration, the steel bars corrode causing spalling of the concrete. Areas with reduced air circulation generate high levels of sulfur dioxide, which can affect the integrity and durability of the concrete. Damages commonly encountered in sewage structures include corrosion, carbonation, alkali-silica reaction, cracking by freeze-thaw cycles, and structural weaknesses. Damaged concrete leads also to contamination of soil through seeping of sewage water into the surrounding media.

The refurbishment systems used to waterproof and protect sewage facilities need to take into account several parameters such as the formation of aggressive microclimates in sealed holding tanks, variations in liquid levels and composition, which may include rainwater, wastewater, or household/industrial sewage, and the degree of contamination on the environment.

Holderchem offers effective products to waterproof and protect sewage facilities from such damaging effects. The proposed products are designed to handle both new and refurbishment works. The figures herein below describe typical areas of application and include trade names of the Holderchem products and their consumption rates:

  • Refurbishment of sewage concrete pipes (Fig. 1).
  • Treatment of manholes and inspection shafts (Fig. 2).
  • Protection of treatment sewage plants (Fig. 3).
  • Protection of masonry and concrete channels (Fig. 4).
