Waterproofing Swimming Pools and Decks

Cement-based products are the preferred method for waterproofing pools. It is essential to treat the concrete before applying a waterproofing system and tile mesh. The contractor will ensure that the substrate is sound and clean and the concrete surface is free of dust, oil, grease, and any existing laitance. Holes that may appear due to mold will be carefully cleaned and a plugged mortar applied. All damaged areas of old or new pools and large holes will be properly repaired, and cracks filled with repair mortar. The joints between horizontal surfaces and vertical walls will be treated before applying the waterproofing system. Generally, to do this, it is recommended to create 2 cm wide and 2 cm deep grooves and create a 90⁰ angle curve with non-sagging thixotropic mortar.

A plaster key layer will be applied 2 mm to 6 mm thick over the concrete, and a fiber plaster ready to use up to 15 mm thick will then be applied to ensure the plaster is well aligned. In cases where more thickness is desired, scratch the finishing layer and apply a second plastering mortar layer. Use a floor screed to ensure the concrete floor is well aligned. Choose the floor screed product in accordance with the required thickness, ensuring that joints are created every 25 m². Ensure good curing of the plaster to avoid crack formation.

Once, as described here, the concrete has been repaired, and the plaster and floor screed applied to align the surfaces, proceed with the application of a high-performance flexible cement waterproofing product. The first layer should be applied with a thickness of at least 0.5 kg/m², fixing with fiber mesh joints, cracks, and corners. A second layer should be applied over the first layer, drying to a thickness of 0.5 to 1 kg/m².

Perform flood tests before proceeding with fixing tiles to ensure the pool is waterproof. Apply a two-component flexible tile adhesive. Mix the powder component with the liquid component using an electric mixer. Use a notched trowel to evenly apply the tile adhesive onto the waterproof mortar and press the tiles firmly. If necessary, tile adhesive can be applied to the back of the applied tiles. When repairing tiles, clean the area and apply epoxy grout to the joints using a rubber spatula. As the grout dries, clean the tiles with a dry cloth. Let the grout cure for a week before performing a flood test.
